Filauro et al. Evone® Flow controlled ventilation: a new device for laryngotracheal surgery. Acta Otorhinolaryngol Ital. 2022
Dr. Filauro and colleagues present a prospective observational study to evaluate the use of Tritube and Evone for laryngotracheal surgery. Five female patients were included that were scheduled for treatment of pathological airway narrowing resulting from idiopathic subglottic stenosis (ISS) or recurrent respiratory papillomatosis (RRP). Upon intubation, Tritube created a stable and wide transoral surgical field, while ventilation in FCV mode provided adequate respiratory parameters in all patients. No complications were reported during anesthesiologic and surgical procedures. The postoperative course of all patients was regular and all patients were discharged the day after the operation. The authors emphasize the advantages of the Evone system over high frequency jet ventilation (HFJV): While FCV provides fully controlled ventilation and thereby reduces the risks of hypoxia and hypercarbia as well as emphysema and barotrauma, the presence of a sealed airway prevents aspiration and the aerosolization of airborne pathogens.
